Junior Conservationist: Stories in Nature- Flora Lake

Join BYLT and certified California Naturalists Steve Roddy and Linda Conklin the second Saturday of every month as we explore local trails and discover the plants, animals, and history of each special region.

This special outing follows a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail near Donner summit and includes a swim in Flora Lake. We’ll follow a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail, south between I-80 and Highway 40 with breathtaking scenery and granite monoliths to play on. Donner Lake is visible from portions of the trail as well as great views of Castle Peak. The hike has gentle ups and downs with a rocky or dirt surface with roots.

Come explore nature and become a Junior Conservationist! A conservationist is someone who advocates or acts for the protection and preservation of the environment and wildlife. This outing is designed for energetic young hikers, age 5 to 12, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, who are comfortable walking 3 – 4 miles. We’ll stop on the granite rocks at the edge of the lake for lunch and swimming. Please wear sturdy shoes suitable for hiking, closed-toe water shoes, a swim suit and towels and comfortable clothing. Please bring plenty of water and a lunch and leave dogs at home.

Special Note: This outing requires a drive to Donner Summit. Plan for at least a 50-mile drive, one way. There is an outhouse at the trailhead, but no water or restroom at the lake.

Suggested donation of $10 per family.
Space is limited. We encourage you to sign up early.
