Call for Poets

Since 1990, Bear Yuba Land Trust has been diligently building and maintaining public, recreational trails within our community, with 50+ miles to date. Our annual Celebration of Trails event during the month of June is an opportunity to engage the community through numerous trail-centric, family friendly activities. As part of Celebration of Trails, BYLT is commissioning two (2) poets to write and recite trail-inspired poetry. We will mount these poems on durable signage to be installed at trailheads or trailside the following year.

Criteria:

Celebration of Trails Poetry Commissions will be place-based, land-inspired poems that reflect upon our community’s unique land, water, flora, and fauna. Commissions may also draw upon the shared heritage and the array of cultures who have made a mark on the land over history, while shaping how our community considers and values open space and conserved lands.

Poems will be original, newly created works written specifically for Celebration of Trails. All forms of poetry are acceptable. Selected poets will recite their poem along the trail during a Celebration of Trails event in June. Poems will also be mounted and installed at trailhead or trailside the following year. Please note that selected poets will have the option to edit their poem before they are recited/publicized in June 2024.

Submission Guidelines:

  1. Original poem of any type and length. Submissions will be place-based, land-inspired poems that reflect upon our community’s unique land, water, flora, and fauna. Submissions may also draw upon the shared heritage and the array of cultures who have made a mark on the land over history, while shaping how our community considers and values open space and conserved lands.
  2. Poet Bio and CV

The submission process is now closed. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel that consists of BYLT staff and community members. Final announcement will be made in mid-April 2024.

Commission Benefits:

  1. Commissioned poets will receive a stipend of $300 to write and recite the poem.
  2. Commissioned poets will be credited in all marketing and advertising in conjunction with Celebration of Trails Poetry Commissions. We will request a bio, headshot (or other image), and social handles for each poet to use in promotion.
